Star Wars: The Old Republic offers romance options between same-gender companions and features queer characters who are important to the narrative. However, respondents to the Queer Representation (2016) survey dislike the heternormativity of the base game, with expansion packs being needed to access queer options. While you can have one 'serious' relationship and multiple flings throughout the game, these cannot be had with the same gender as the player-character. Similarly, there are no canonically queer NPCs and all relationships encountered, regardless of race, are between a man and a woman. This game was praised as having one respondent's favourite character creator, however.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic offers a lesbian romance sub-plot with Juhani, who is the first canonical lesbian Star Wars character. If the player-character is a woman and follows the Light Side, Juhani will confess her feelings for her before the final battle; the player has the option of reciprocating these feelings. If the player-character is a man and attempts to flirt with Juhani, she is openly disgusted.

A respondent to the Queer Representation (2016) survey praised Knights of the Old Republic because of the challenge of the romance system, with relationships potentially going sour at any moment if incorrect choices are made. A positive comment was also made about the Wookies in the game, with their biological sex rarely known and generally unimportant. The respondent said that your interactions with Wookies usually resemble, 'There's a Wookie. Wookie has a ballin' gun. That's all you need to know.'
